Classic spa vacation, there are no longer

Bremen. The experiences of our readers in practices and clinics? What works well, and where there might be problems? We have asked our health in check facts - and received almost 150 responses. Not always sufficient treatment from the doctor or the hospital - sometimes the patient needs a medical rehabilitation, short rehab to be fit again. The majority of our readers had no difficulty to apply this - or has not needed any rehab. Often the rehab directly following a hospital stay, such as after a hip surgery or a stroke. "It is quite clear that rehabilitation is required," says Jörn Hons, spokesman for the AOK Bremen / Bremerhaven. "The social services of the hospitals will take care of the organization."

Multiple readers of us have reported long waits for a rehab place. "In general, the rehabilitation should begin within 14 days of completion of hospital treatment," explains Wolfgang Polite, who is responsible for the applications with the AOK. Longer waiting times give it only in individual cases, for example, if all beds were occupied in a rehabilitation clinic. "But that's the exception," says politely. Should not be done after a hospital stay, but according to an outpatient rehab treatment, the patient must first submit an application to the competent institution shall: For professionals this is the pension, the retired or insured as family and children health insurance. Is checked, the application of the cash or the medical service (MDK).

"Generally speaking, the insurance may approve the application only if a rehabilitation program is medically necessary and a positive prognosis for the patient promises," says consultant MDK Mechthild Böschen. Also there could be a rehab only if all treatment options have been exhausted at home. And a stationary rehabilitation will only be prescribed if a patient is not capable of rehabilitation. "That's what our stepped care system." We have written several readers who consider this method for "not transparent" or blame the cash "arbitrariness" in the decision. In contrast, Wolfgang politely resists: "If I reject a request, I founded the great detail," he says. "The statement may sometimes be two pages long -. Allow the patient understands exactly why it is not approved rehabilitation" Politely has doubts about an application, he may obtain the opinion of the MDK - only specialists working there.

Contradiction is possible

Many readers have appealed after their application was refused rehab, one is drawn up even before the Social Court. "Something like this is very rare," says Jörn Hons. He advises patients to always consult a contradiction with the doctor. "Perhaps the medical situation has changed," he says. "Then it can be quite useful to appeal." Was especially important that physicians filled out the application forms as detailed and well-founded, so they keep a rehab necessary.

Elderly people often see this as unfair if their rehabilitation application is rejected again, despite opposition. "When you're retired, the fund pays no more" - this statement appeared several times in our letters to. Wolfgang Polite also knows the rule only too well. "That's not," he says. More and more elderly people would need today due to many concurrent diseases called a geriatric rehabilitation. To help them after an illness to cope with everyday life as long as possible on their own. "The classic spa holiday of yesteryear, however, there is not more," said Polite. "As many may have the wrong idea in his head."

But not only the number of elderly rehabilitation patients is increasing, and increasingly younger are dependent on it. so politely: "We always have more stroke patients who are only 40 or 50". Even with mental illness or addiction rehab needed a lot younger.

One particular area are the mother-child treatment: Several readers have taken advantage of this and were very satisfied. The funds have their 2012 assessment policy for parent-child treatments revised after the Federal Court had described the procedure as very transparent. "Currently, nearly 100 percent of all applications approved for parent-child treatments," says Jörn Hons.
